John K. Houston papers, 1856-1899 (bulk 1862-1866).

The papers consist of correspondence, military orders, receipts, invoices, and records of John K. Houston during the Civil War (1862-1866). The family correspondence includes letters between J.K. Houston and his brothers, William E.B. Houston and Albert P. Houston; his cousin, William E. Chamberlain and wife, R.A. Chamberlain; as well as a number of personal friends from California during Houston's career as an army officer in several units of the California Volunteers. The military correspondence consists of letters between different officers and military posts of the 1st and 5th California Volunteers during their campaigns in the Southwest. Military receipts, requisitions, and records are from Houston's service as an Army Assistant Quarter Master (A.A.Q.M.) in support of California Volunteer Regiments in the Arizona and New Mexico Territories. The two oversize folios contain various oversize records pertaining to quartermaster activities for the California Volunteer units.
